BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS. February 2, 2007 -- In a 41 page report released to the Central Illinois Organizing Project
(CIOP), evening bus service in Springfield is both "feasible and necessary". The feasibility study, completed by
Urbitran Associates, is the first phase of the process to bring evening bus service to Springfield after 50 years without it.
"This consultant report gives us a giant step forward in meeting the long overdue need for night time bus service in Springfield"
said Jane Ford, CIOP spokesperson. "Public input makes the difference" she said. "Organizing works.".
The study reports evening bus service benefits to the community, specifying 3rd shift workers, seniors, people with disabilities
and lower income families without cars. CIOP has led the campaign for evening bus service for the last 2 years, most
recently organizing nearly 200 residents to attend a public input hearing with Urbitran officials.
The next phase of in implementing evening bus service will be Urbitran, along with CIOP and SMTD, to analyze proposed night time
routes.
CIOP is a regional faith-based community organization composed of 25 member churches and organizations representing 33,000
families in Central Illinois. CIOP has affiliates in Bloomington-Normal, Springfield, Champaign, Decatur, Danville and a family
